Well 402, after reading all the rules and fine print, I must respectfully decline entering this contest. I had originally submitted my map prior to reading these "new" official rules, etc. If that previous submission is being counted as an entry, then I'm informing you that it is hereby withdrawn from the competition.
I think it only fair that you (and others) should know the reasons why. I'm quite sure the rationale won't make a difference in the grand scheme of things, nor invoke any change, but I will still explain nonetheless, and let the chips fall where they may.
Aside from the contradictions contained within the rules themselves, I find it rather disingenuous of Infinity Ward to place such restrictive rules on this contest. While apparently promoting modding/mapping in the community, when the rules are examined more closely, they in fact cause quite the opposite. And yes, while I can certainly appreciate the logistics of using stock textures, sounds, and the like........it is the "fine print" which is most disconcerting.
To require that entrants must relinquish control, ownership, and effectively all rights of their map(s) is not only unfair and bordering on unjust, it is an insult to our collective intelligence, effort, and loyalty. These maps are created by people who have other careers, by people still in school, by people with young children..........by loyal Call of Duty gamers/mappers who devote their precious free time from their families and whatnot to work to improve the gaming experience of countless people.
Behind these unreasonable rules lies a distressing possibility: that IW/Actv can essentially take a mapper's base files, modify it as they see fit, and claim ownership, credit, and profit from someone else's work. That is, quite frankly, wrong and unjust. And then for multi-million dollar corporations to simply hand out a graphics card or a t-shirt as consolation........is laughable. The hours put into a map, the potential for credit and recognition.......even at 1/10 a justifiable billable rate........would equal far more than the carrot being dangled, especially given the "winner" actually loses everything s/he just worked toward.
I certainly cannot speak for anyone else, but it would seem that the more serious and talented mappers would not want to relinquish ownership of their map(s), and from what I read around these forums, this seems to be supported by the questions and complaints being raised. This would mean that IW is pushing away those people that are supposedly being sought.
It's disappointing, to say the least, that such a great idea from IW would result in contest that undermines the mapping community's talents and efforts. Love the game, but not this contest. Misguided. Better luck next time.
Respectfully Robert, good luck with your contest. Perhaps you will find someone willing to hand over a great map that you can push and you can call this a success.
Thank you for the consideration and your time.
~Skyguy

Lessing,
